BITTER SWEET RIP OFF

Andrew Oldham's, The Rolling Stones Songbook is an orchestral collection of Stones classics from the mid 1960's. One song in particular has an important relevance to any fan of the Verve. Track 11, The Last Time is the song that Richard Ashcroft stole music from for his largest commercial hit, Bitter Sweet Symphony. To This day I don't think the Verve have received any royalties for Bitter Sweet. I'm Guessing it all goes into Mick Jaggers deep pockets. Bitter Sweet Symphony is a dead ringer for The Last Time with it's strings and beat so well known now thanks to Mr. Ashcroft and friends. Bitters Sweet Symphony is still a classic and I tip my hat to The Verve for taking what they wanted. Would they do it differently had they known it would cost them millions? "Let the melody shine, let it cleanse my mind, I feel free now"

All That Noise

I wouldn't call this album a lost classic however I would call it a hidden treasure for those who have only scratched the surface of the early 90's Brit Pop movement. The Darkside's All That Noise was released in 1990. With the baggy movement in full effect It never really had any commercial success at the time possibly due to it's darker psychedelic side. It did however have a groove that was right on with the times. This album has a big outer space sound yet not quite shoegaze. Track nine, Soul Deep is a ripping jam that really defines the Darkside's blues side. On some of the slower tracks you really have a dreamy sound similar the The Verve's, Storm In Heaven or even The Inspiral Carpets, Beast Inside. Their second Lp Melomania like it's predecessor has a heavy valium sound with crunchy guitars, Hammond organs and big grooving melodies. This is a fantastic band that should be part of your record collection.

Other releases by The Darkside:
Melomania. Lp
Mayhem To Meditate. B sides and Mixes of Mystic Morning
Pete Bassman's new band. Alphastone

The lost Band.

Mainstream UK, not to be confused with a handful of other more recent bands using this name. If I recall correctly The Rozzer discovered these guys in a Q or NME circa 1997/1998. We found the first single, Step Right Up in a Virgin Records , San Francisco and were totally blown away. The A side, Step Right Up opens with a nasty guitar riff followed by a big Hammond which is a hammering constant throughout the track. Lead singer Anthony Neale has a voice so smooth yet when mixed with Conrad Mewton's guitars a fantastic passion resonates.

Nude records released two more singles I know of, Canjam and Hurricane. Both with fantastic B sides including a Perfecto remix with a big beat (Step Right Up). Their debut and final album was released in 1998. I recall listening to this album and being completely floored. This album is truly a sophisticated britpop psychedelic masterpiece. Anthony Neale has a voice and a swagger I would compare only to Brett Anderson. The album artwork is also very Coming Up (Suede) with it's sexy shine. With the omnipresent Hammond organs one can only think of The Charlatans. Track eight, Transatlantic is a nine minute psych odyssey which takes you on a britpop journey you can't really take with any other band of that era. It truly is a thing of beauty. Mainstream is the perfect marriage of Suede and The Charlatans. I feel strongly that this is without a doubt the most underrated, under appreciated band of the britpop era.

I'm not quite sure what ever happened to these guys. Like their haunting beat they seemed to disappear into the night. I do remember reading something in the late 90's about them getting into some trouble in Turkey, but it was rather vague. I wish I knew more.

Gorillaz, Plastic Beach

Hello there, does anyone have anything to say about the new Gorillaz album? I really like the Damon tunes quite a bit. They remind me of some of the more electronic tracks from The Great Escape. It's always nice to hear Damon, I just wish he would get back together with some guitars.
